When the railroads asked General Motors' Electro-Motive division for a locomotive with more horsepower, EMD responded with one of the strongest locomotives of its time. 260 were built from 1959 to 1962, with these powerful locomotives making quite a name for themselves. In fact, it took only three GP20s to pull as many cars as four F3s. Life-Like's replicated version of this powerful locomotive recreates every fine detail. See-through steps, footboards and fan grilles with visible blades, working cab doors, and finely-crafted handrails are just a few of this model's highlights. Custom features such as dynamic brakes, drop steps, sunshades, a winterization hatch, M.U. boxes and five different road-specific fan styles are included. These options were ordered by the original locomotive owners to adapt to certain climate, terrain and specific duties.

The PROTO 2000 GP20 is powered by an extremely smooth running motor with a heavy die-cast chassis. All-wheel drive and electrical pick-up, a 5 pole skew-wound balanced armature motor with low amp draw and dual machined brass flywheels give this locomotive a performance rating far above industry standards. The precisely-meshed worm gear and spur teeth create the quiet running that is expected of PROTO 2000. Life-Like's "geep" also features the magnetically operated PROTO 2000 knuckle couplers. X2F couplers are also included. The GP-20 can be considered both a beginning and an end. It was the last first generation locomotive produced by EMD. The advances heralded the second generation of EMD locomotives. Initially an experimental homebuilt, designed by Union Pacific's Omaha shops, this locomotive type increased per unit horse power of an already proven system.
