Li-on batteries have reached the sweet spot where performance has been maxed and price has been lowered sufficiently to be effective. The Aristo-Craft CREST Li-on battery pack has 2 amp hours at 21.5 volts and includes an auto cutoff and re-settable circuit breaker. The best thing about Li-on batteries is they have no adverse memory to upset re-charging. Furthermore Li-on batteries can be put in parallel, so you can have 4 amp hours still at the 21.5 voltage.
The physical size of 2 1/8” long, 1 3/8” wide and 2 1/2” tall allows you to fit the Li-on batteries inside a locomotive, tender or trailing battery car of almost any type. The battery pack comes with a wire and plug ready to connect to the battery plugs on Aristo-Craft locomotives. A simple Velcro connection will keep the batteries in place during operation and make them very easy to remove for recharging. Trailing battery cars are useful way to do battery operation because batteries and receivers are not required for every locomotive. Because Li-on batteries are relatively light, 10.2 oz, the battery car will not require ball bearing wheels for support, as would a car with Gel Cell batteries.
The style number for the Li-on batteries is CRE-55610 for a 6-cell pack at 21.5 volts and 2 amp hours. The charger is CRE-55620. The charger is an overnight charger, though obviously we will look for a fast charger in the future.
